EV Charger Installation: What the Electrician Actually Does

Most people book this job without knowing what they're buying. You get three quotes, they range from $550to well over two grand, and nothing explains the gap. So here's the whole thing, start to finish — what happens, why the price moves, and the handful of questions that tell you whether you're talking to someone who knows what they're doing.

The short version

A licensed electrician checks whether your panel can take the extra load, runs a dedicated 240V circuit from the panel to wherever you park, installs a breaker sized to the charger, mounts and connects the unit, then pulls a permit and gets it inspected. On a normal job that's two to four hours of work and $550$950 in labor, plus $50$400 for the permit. Everything above that number comes from one of three things: distance, your panel, or trenching.

Before anything: the load calculation

This is the part nobody talks about and the part that decides your price. Your house has a fixed amount of electrical capacity. The electrician has to work out how much of it your existing appliances already claim, and whether what's left can carry a charger pulling 40 or 48 amps for hours at a stretch.

There are two ways to do it. The old way adds up the rated loads of everything in the house. The better way, if your utility can provide it, uses your actual peak demand from the last year of billing data — real numbers instead of worst-case assumptions. That second method regularly saves people a panel upgrade, because the paper math says a house is full when the meter says it isn't.

Worth knowing:if an electrician tells you that you need a panel upgrade without having done a load calculation, they're guessing. A panel upgrade runs well into four figures, so it's worth a second opinion before you accept one.

The install itself, hour by hour

Killing power and opening the panel

Main breaker off, panel cover off. They're looking for two adjacent open slots and confirming what the bus bar can take. Ten minutes, and sometimes the point where a job turns into a different job.

Running the cable

The single biggest variable in your quote. Along a garage wall it's quick and cheap. Through a finished ceiling, into a crawlspace, or across to a detached garage means fishing wire through places that fight back — and that's billed by the foot for a reason.

Sizing and fitting the breaker

Continuous loads follow the 80% rule: the breaker has to be rated 125% of what the charger draws continuously. That's a 50A breaker for a 40A charger, 60A for a 48A one. Wire gauge follows the breaker, which is why nobody should be running 8-gauge to a 60A circuit.

Mounting and connecting the charger

Hardwired or plugged into a 240V outlet, depending on the model and where it lives. Outdoors, or anywhere the charger could get wet, the rules tighten and hardwiring often wins.

Testing

Voltage at the terminals, ground continuity, then an actual charging session with a car plugged in. If the electrician packs up without seeing electrons move, they haven't finished.

The permit and the inspection

Adding a 240V circuit is permitted work almost everywhere. Your electrician files it, the city sends an inspector after the fact, and the whole thing costs $50$400 depending on where you live. It usually adds a week or two to the timeline, most of it waiting for the inspector rather than for the work.

People do skip it. It's a bad trade. Telling a fair quote from a padded one

Three quotes for the same job can land hundreds apart, and it isn't always because one of them is overcharging. Usually they've made different assumptions. Here's what to look for.

  • Hardware and labor listed separately
  • Permit and inspection named as a line item
  • They measured the cable run instead of estimating it
  • They asked what car you drive, or plan to
  • They looked inside the panel before quoting

Walk-away signs

  • A single lump sum with no breakdown
  • A panel upgrade quoted without a load calculation
  • “We can skip the permit”
  • A price given over the phone, sight unseen
  • No license number, or one they won't give you

That last one matters more than it sounds. Licensing is what stands between you and a circuit that fails an inspection you paid for.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Two to four hours for a straightforward job — panel in the garage, charger going on the wall a few feet away. Add half a day if the cable has to cross the house, and treat it as a separate job if the panel needs replacing.

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?

In nearly every jurisdiction, yes. Adding a 240V circuit is permitted electrical work. The electrician normally pulls it and schedules the inspection; if one offers to skip it to save you a couple hundred dollars, that is a reason to call someone else.

Can I install a Level 2 charger myself?
